About

Welcome to Mighty Meep! We are a group of gamers, nerds and friends that share a passion for one thing–tabletop games! We enjoy tabletop games of all varieties, from board games to roleplaying games, from card games to tactical miniatures, and so much more. Our hope is that you have some fun with us and discover a new game or two along the way.

What’s a “Mighty Meep?”

Great question! “Meep” is short for “meeple.” Meeples are common pieces in many board games, such as Caracassone or even Wits & Wagers Family. These faceless figures come in all sorts of colors, sizes and shapes and are representations of the players at the table. To me, the Meeple is a great analogy to gamers–We come in all varieties of sizes, colors, and personalities, yet we all share a common love for gaming.

Tabletop gaming has made great strides over the last several years towards breaking out of the niche market and into the mainstream crowds. We’ve seen it expanding more and more in a really exciting way. Yet, there has always been a noticeable lack of solid websites that convey news, reviews, and fun information about board, card, or even roleplaying games. Tabletop gaming is on the cusp of a significant breakthrough, and those that love the hobby should be there to help bring new gamers into the fold.

That’s where “Mighty Meep” comes in. We are simply gamers that love seeing our hobby grow and want to share our passion with others. We hope to offer a fun and entertaining source of meaningful news and thought-provoking articles for new or veteran gamers alike. Our aim is to provide a fun community for people to meet and hang out, not bogged down in corporate bullshit or industry politics. We will cover the things that we, and hopefully all of you, enjoy.

What Do You Cover?

Our goal is provide meaningful news, reviews, and opinions regarding the latest and greatest tabletop games. Our primary focus is covering board games, card games (including Living and Collectible flavors) and roleplaying games that we enjoy. Eventually, we plan to expand our coverage to include miniature war games and other genres as we grow.

Ultimately, we want Mighty Meep to be a website that, as tabletop gamers, we’d be interested in reading. If there are particular games or pieces that you wish to see more of on the site, please let us know!

Meet the Meeple

Josh McIllwain is co-founder and editor of Mighty Meep. He has enjoyed all forms of gaming his entire life, but his interest in tabletop games began sometime in the mid-90’s. Roleplaying games have always been closest to his heart, being introduced to the world of Dungeons & Dragons through computer games such as Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment. The social aspect of tabletop games always appealed to him and still does today, and he relishes any opportunity to learn a new board game or dust off an old favorite.

His love for writing also began around the same time, when a school friend and he formed a very crude HTML site to write reviews for Nintendo 64 games. He continued writing reviews for his own enjoyment for years after, covering movies, comic books and music albums. In college, he wrote film reviews for his university newspaper and eventually stepped into an editorial position, expanding the paper’s entertainment coverage in new ways. In 2009, he performed some freelance work for sites like GotGame and Ars Technica before temporarily stepping away from writing for personal reasons. The notable lack of tabletop gaming websites, despite the growing popularity of the hobby, has pulled him back to pursue his silly dreams of writing for websites once again. He hopes to provide a fun community for gamers to come together and simply have a good time.
