Quick show of hands, how many of you are familiar with Extra Life, the annual gaming-related fundraiser?
I can’t actually see how many folks actually put their hands up — I live in the Internet, after all — but I’m assuming a fair number of visitors have never heard of it. It’s okay, that’s why I’m here today. Extra Life is an awesome thing and hopefully you’ll feel encouraged to participate as well after learning more about it!
Extra Life began in 2008 as a charity to honor Tori Enmon, a member of the Sarcastic Gamer Community that lost her life to cancer. The Sarcastic Gamers raised funds to purchase video games and other forms of entertainment to raise Tori’s spirits during her hospital stays, but ultimately lost the fight in January 2008.
Since then, the people behind Tori’s original fundraising decided to take their approach to a bigger scale and assist others that are suffering from terminal illnesses and diseases. Over the last several years, Extra Life has continued to raise more and more money each year that goes towards local children’s hospitals to provide the level of care these children require.
For the last 3 years, I have personally participated in Extra Life to raise money for my local hospital, Children’s Hospital Central California. This year, on October 25th, I will be involved once again with Extra Life 2014. Last year, my local game store, Crazy Squirrel Game Store, and I teamed up and raised over $1,000. This year, we are doubling down on our efforts and hope to raise a total of $2,000. You can find our team page here, and by clicking on the roster, you can see who is participating and visit out personal fundraising pages.
You may have already noticed, but on the right side of Mighty Meep you’ll find a donation meter and link. For the next month, this donation link will remain in place to show everyone how much more we require to achieve our goal. We need your help to make this possible though. Please consider donating to our team; all proceeds go towards our local children’s hospital.
On October 25th, our team will be meeting at the Crazy Squirrel Game Store to engage in a 24-hour gaming marathon as our way of raising awareness for this fantastic cause. Your donations help sponsor our efforts and will keep us going during the long hours of the night.
If you want to raise money yourself, feel free to join our team and set up your own fundraising page! We would love to have our community involved, and be sure to let us know your own personal Extra Life stories if you’ve participated before. Thanks again everyone, we couldn’t do this without you.
